Search the Scriptures: Sanctification

In recent months we've been searching the scriptures together after lunch on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Last month we looked at how to rightly divide the subject of JUSTIFICATION. Lord willing this coming Sunday, we will take up the topic of SANCTIFICATION and how to rightly divide the bible's statements to avoid logical contradiction. This time of searching the scriptures is open to anyone who is interested. To prime the pump for our discussion, take a look at the first two instances of the word SANCTIFIED in the bible:

"And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made." (Genesis 2:3)

"And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes." (Exodus 19:4)

Consider the following questions:

  1. What does SANCTIFICATION mean?
A: Sanctification means to set apart and is closely associated with the term “holiness.”

  2. How are these two SANCTIFICATIONS similar and different?
A: One is done by God; the other by man in obedience to God.

  3. Who is doing the SANCTIFYING in each instance?
A: God in the first instance; Moses in the second.

  4. Is there something in the distinction that can help us with the topic of SANCTIFICATION?
A: Yes. All sanctifications are not the same nor do they have the same implications.

If there's a particular verse that speaks of SANCTIFICATION that you'd like to discuss, this is a good opportunity for us to search the scriptures together, even as the Lord commanded. I'm looking forward to our discussion.

RIGHTLY DIVIDING SANCTIFICATION

While searching the scriptures with my church family this past Sunday, I mentioned that I would provide a list of SANCTIFICATION verses for everyone to consider. This list only includes verses that contain the words sanctify, sanctified, sanctifieth, and sanctification. There are other verses that speak to the concept without using the word, but I’ll leave that alone for now. Broadly speaking, there are two categories of sanctification that are a helpful start toward rightly dividing subject:

LEGAL and POSITIONAL SANCTIFICATION - this is a monergistic work wherein God sets apart his chosen people to be the beneficiaries of his saving work on their behalf. It is conferred upon men by grace alone. It is not the result of our actions, but is in spite of our actions. This sanctification plays a participatory role in the broader work whereby God’s elect are eternally saved.

ETHICAL and PRACTICAL SANCTIFICATION - this is a synergistic work wherein disciples are exhorted to avail themselves of God’s ever-present promise to help them avoid temptation (I Corinthians 10:13) and walk in obedience to the precepts of Christ as a reasonable service (Romans 12:1). This sanctification plays no participatory role in the work of eternal salvation, but is intended for our temporal well-being in this lifetime. It is greatly varied among the flock of God and its ramifications are temporal.
