Reverend
I have been asked at least half a dozen times in the past month as to why I don’t carry the title of ‘Reverend’ instead of ‘Elder’ as an ordained Primitive Baptist pastor. I want to explain this in the most kind and loving way possible. There are a few names in scripture that are given to ordained preachers of the gospel. Bishop, Elder, Pastor, Minister, Brother, or even birth name (“Paul “often refers to himself that way). The term Reverend is only used one time in scripture...
“He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.” (Psalm 111:9)
You see, “Reverend” is a title reserved for Christ alone. We believe no man is worthy of this title. Scripture plainly teaches that “Reverend is HIS name.” Jesus Christ is the only one who is to be revered by men. I might as well call myself “Lord.” It would be the same. If I’m being honest, “brother Kevin” or simply “Kevin” works for me. I understand the purpose of the title and by no means want to diminish that, but I am simply a beggar telling another beggar where I found food.
Once again, I am not trying to offend. I am simply publicly answering a question that I have been asked repeatedly in the last few weeks. Nobody means any offense by asking the question, they are simply curious and wanting to learn. Maybe we should all ask more questions…
